Attic insulation questions

Some attic questions need a whole guide. These don't. Each page below takes one question people actually type into a search bar and answers it in a few minutes of reading, with the source for every fact.

Before you spend anything

Whether it pays here, and how long it keeps working.

2 pages

  1. Is it worth it?

Fog-side and valley homes get different things out of the same job. Here's how to tell which side of the line your house is on.

  2. How long it lasts

Insulation doesn't have a use-by date, but plenty of Bay Area attics hold insulation that stopped doing its job years ago. Here's what wears it out.

Health questions

Answered from CDPH, CDC, NIOSH and OEHHA, and nothing beyond them.

2 pages

  1. Rodent droppings

You found droppings on the insulation. Before you grab a broom or the shop vac, read what California's health department says to do instead.

  2. Is it safe?

Fiberglass has a cancer listing in California and cellulose has chemicals in it. What those facts mean, read exactly as the agencies wrote them.

Fire questions

Materials, light fixtures and embers.

2 pages

  1. Is it flammable?

Glass, stone, paper and plastic all get called insulation. They behave very differently near heat, and in a wildfire the weak point isn't the insulation.

  2. Recessed lights

Those round ceiling lights poke up into the attic. Whether insulation can touch them depends on two letters stamped inside the housing.

Where the question touches health or fire, the answers stick to what official agencies publish: the California Department of Public Health, the CDC, NIOSH, OEHHA, the Department of Energy, the CPSC and the California Energy Commission. We quote them closely and don't go further than they do. Every one of those pages ends with a link to the agency's own page, so you can read it in their words.

And where the answer is "it depends on your attic", we say what it depends on. If you'd rather someone looked, the services page lists what we do, and you can book a free inspection or send photos instead.

Let's go look at your attic.

Start with your ZIP code. A few questions later you'll have a Bay Area market range, and you can pick a time for a free inspection.
